Amit Levinger (b. 1978), lives and works in Tel Aviv. Levinger has exhibited extensively in Israel and abroad, in venues such as the ICA Philadelphia, Tate Modern, and Loop, Barcelona (2009). He is the winner of 2011 the Israel ministry of culture awards for young artists.
The fundamental moment, the sheer crystallization of fulfilling art production, is experienced in Amit Levinger's work as a "stinging" moment which flickers from zapping between mediums,
techniques and tactics of display.
In his kinetic sculptures and video works Levinger deals with jammed mechanisms; stuck, awkward or unfulfilling. The works tell the story of a lame apparatus. It is the failure of progress, going against technology, that produces poetry, emotion and beauty. The focus on prosaic everyday objects (magnifying glass, weights, a Falafel stand), and tiny moments, creates a distorted semi-formalist aesthetics. By disruption of syntax and broken language, moments of magic are made. The touching and emotional side of the works is destined to rise from absurdity and irony.
